Gambian/African pouched rats are amazing animals. They are smart, large and can be great companions. They are even being trained to detect mines to help the human race. These animals were banned in the US completely, but recently a few years ago the ban was lifted, however it is still illegal to import these creatures from the UK to the US! There are no breeders of the intelligent mammals in the US, making it completely impossible for anyone here to get these amazing animals. We want the import ban to be lifted!!!

I have been researching the specific trade laws preventing these imports to prepare a formal letter for the USDA. Email your local representative today to ask why these animals are still restricted despite their proven benefits. Send this link to three people you know who care about exotic animal rights.

Hitting this milestone proves that people recognize the immense value of these animals. Now I need you to email your local representatives and demand a revision to the import regulations. Tell them why the current ban is outdated and unfair.

They were believed to be carrying a disease from africa. However they were and are not. They lift hasn't happened because too many people fear they will go feral and have diseases, however there have been feral pouchies in Florida for years with no problems.
These animals could be useful as service companions as well as pets. Any animal imported from overseas would have to have a health clearance first, so the risk of any disease being brought with them is as minimal as any other imported animal. Please give rat fanciers and disabled citizens the opportunity to work with this intelligent species.
I agree! Ban needs to be lifted. Since there was a ban on both all of the gpr have disappeared, now that we are allowed to have them we should be allowed to get them from breeders everywhere!
I have regular fancy rats, and would love pouched rats. However I am in the USA and can't find any for sale
Fantastic creatures with increasingly stronger bloodlines, having been 'captive bred' for many years now. We breed these as companion animals in the UK.

I love Gambian Pouched rats, and I plan to move to America at some point, and I really would love to own them over there.
