The school board voted to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the nondiscrimination policy. We will monitor the implementation process to ensure these protections are enforced in all classrooms and district offices.

Currently, Mansfield ISD does not protect their LGBT employees and students under their nondiscrimination policy. If you agree that LGBT employees and students deserve to be treated as equals and to be protected under the policy please sign. The petition will be presented to the school board on March 27, 2018.

Current Policy:

Employees

The District prohibits discrimination, including harassment, against any employee on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, or any other basis prohibited by law. Retaliation against anyone involved in the complaint process is a violation of District policy.

Students

The District prohibits discrimination, including harassment, against any student on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability, or any other basis prohibited by law. The District prohibits dating violence, as defined by this policy. Retaliation against anyone involved in the complaint process is a violation of District policy.

No male teacher would ever be disciplined for mentioning his wife, and no female teacher for mentioning her husband. This is blatantly about allowing homophobia to dictate school policy. Do we want to teach inclusion or exclusion? The choice is ours.

As a former resident of Arlington, TX, I am saddened and ashamed to hear that LGBTQ protections do not exist for our teachers. This is not the open and friendly Arlington that I love. Please protect the civil rights of all teachers, regardless of orientation!

As an LGBT+ student it angers me to see teachers get silenced when talking about people of the LGBT+ community. It is not just bullying but discrimination, basically saying we are not the people you want to hear about even though we are real and we do exist

As the person that I am, a lesbian, black, girl, I would have definitely appreciated, it if my teachers or at least one spoke to my grade about sexual-orientation and gender identity. Just because it has sexual in the name doesn’t mean it’s overtly sexual.

Personally, I think the policy covers this by the last “& any other basis...”, however, just add the words “sexual preference “ & be done with it. This teacher was voted Teacher of the year! The students & parents lover. Just add two words & this is done.

As a parent I would hope my children’s school would protect and treat my children fairly whether straight or gay. I would also hope teachers would do the right thing and stand up for what is right and the kids they teach, just as this teacher did.

As a parent of a future MISD student, I strongly support LGBT protection for MISD employees and students.
