Letter: Putting university values back at the heart of higher education

This White Paper is part of the Conservative program for marketising education in order to weaken state education, as it has by giving away state freehold to dubious charities under the name of academies. All of the managerial and accountancy speak that have so constantly alienated dedicated teachers are imported into higher education, which is seen to have no higher purpose than the salaries it can deliver for graduates and the research that it can deliver to industry.

The privatisation of Universities represents the commodification of education, something to be purchased, rather than a right to be enjoyed and appreciated.

This exile shudders to see what this generation of Tories is dreaming up for higher education.

I have left a permanent job in the UK partly because of what is happening to HE there. This white paper will make things even worse. I owe so much to British HE - to the many excellent and wonderful people there, who are doing their job out of a genuine passion for research and teaching. In spite of QA, impact, and the looming TEF.
