Letter: Putting university values back at the heart of higher education

The proposed measures are contrary to anything that the word University stands for. A university exists to preserve and create knowledge, which its members do through teaching (communicating knowledge to the next generation) and research (creating new knowledge). The parts that the government is interested in, e.g. providing graduates that are employable, are only a beneficial side effect of the core mission of a university - they should never become the core mission.

A thoroughly misguided and destructive proposal that will have catastrophic consequences for everyone wanting to learn, teach or research within what is still referred to as a 'university'.

Rather than nurturing minds through higher education as a value in itself, students are being turned into money making products.
