Letter to Danish Minister of Health against dismissal of Peter Gotzsche

All too often, those who are outspoken and honest get penalised for their opinions. Science is discredited when it trys to silence controversy. Controversy is a means of making progress and identifying things which need to change. No-one should be penalised for trying to do that whether that opinion proves to be right or wrong.

Dr Peter Gotzsche is one of the “good guys” and a rare breed of open, transparent scientists that I and many others hold in great respect of his selfless work. So much of modern “evidence based” medical research is untrustworthy - but when I read something from Peter I instinctively know it is the truth! Do not punish this incredible scientist. The world needs more credible people like Peter. My faith in EBM will be even less without the contributions of Dr Peter Gotzsche. Please don’t make a terrible mistake. Peter Gotzsche has made exceptional contributions to science integrity and systematic reviews. We need him around. Denmark should be proud of him.

If we cannot have dissenting voices in organisations that are held up to be our impartial commentators then how can we expect them to remain impartial?

Dr. Gøtzsche has played a pivotal role in favor of the transparency of clinical data, the priority of public health needs and the defense of rigorous medical research carried out independently of conflicts of interest. We also fear that the dismissal of Dr. Gøtzsche from the Rigshospitalet could harm the international reputation of Danish medical research and could seriously weaken Denmark´s traditional support for open scientific debate. Please reconsider!

I stand in support for Dr Gotzsche

Peter Gotzsche is a giant of science. The action against him was a thundering disgrace to honesty and transparency in scientific discourse.

I support Dr. Goetzsche and academic freedom.

I learned a lot from Peter. The world needs him to continue his good work.

I stand for science integrity, I stand for Peter Goetzsche.

Dr. Gøtzsche´s work at the Nordic Cochrane Centre has been exemplary and far reaching in importance. Any punitive action by his home institution on this basis would be a travesty comparable to the unconscionable action of the Cochrane administration.

Peter may be controversial, but he has often been shown to be right. It would be a sad day for science, health, freedom of speech, and Denmark were he to be dismissed.

I find it quite extraordinary that a scientist or scientifically credible organisation or university could think it right to treat Gotzsche in an abusive manner. This is an embarrassment to all concerned and to Danish science.
