Letter to Carleton University: ASL instructor

Hearing students need qualified Deaf instructor !

Please ensure only trained and qualified Deaf teachers teach ASL to students, whether they be hearing or Deaf students. Hearing teachers who are qualified to teach other subject matters to Deaf and hard of hearing students need to work well with DeF teachers. If interpreters are needed, they need to be qualified interpreters, not sign language students.

I am deaf & I was an instructor for ASL in St. Catharines, Ontario for few years. The deaf (or hard of hearing) instructors are better than hearing people because their signs are not always accurate & don't know the true meaning of deaf culture.

This is not the time to start taking steps backward.

Please hire Deaf, native ASL users to teach these courses. And consider establishing a cetificate program to qualify Deaf people to teach ASL.

Stop colonizing the Deaf community and their culture and language! It is so inappropriate for hearing people to teach a language they are not a native user of. Hire DEAF now.

I support for the Deaf ASL instructor because s/he has the knowledge of deaf culture, fluency in ASL, involves in the deaf community or club, experience dealing the challenges with deafness. Non-deaf instructor has none in dealing with deaf experimence. Good experience for the students to learn from the Deaf instructor is the best way!!!!!!

I truly agree with this statement. In few words, it is cultural appropriation. At the era of #metoo and cultural reconciliation among indigenous people, it is unacceptable. Thanks for listening to the community which main language is ASL.

In the perspective of the non Deaf person should not teach ASL because it's not their culture and ASL. The non Deaf will never understand what feel like a Deaf person and he or she is not a navier ASL from birth until present. The non Deaf person did not have a experience in the journey of the life relates to the discrimination, barriers relates to the jobs, education and communication. The Deaf person should teach ASL because he or she has a lot of experience of the journey in the life relates to the barriers, discrimination and etc. The Deaf person is a navier ASL signs from the childhood life until present and she or he knows about the culture and history relates to the ASL and Deaf.

It requires to use Deaf ASL Instructor and match Deaf Culture.

Deaf people for social justice!

Please do the right thing , hire a deaf person with skills and qualifications. Not hearing person.

It's ridiculous that they've made the decision to not hire a Deaf ASL instructure for an ASL class. You need someone culturally Deaf to teach ASL. Period. Not to mention that they're taking away a job from a Deaf person. Shame on Carleton University.

Please consider the sensitivity of teaching one culture's language by and instructor from a totally different culture!

Carlton University cannot create ASL or Deaf Study programs that are exclusionary to the Deaf academic community.

There are so many jobs non hearing can get that deaf can not so I believe sign language should be taught by deaf.
