No more ablism and audism! I know there is a lot of ablism and audism in the job market. Ableism and audism are a form of discrimination that has been normalized in the society, including academic community for a long time. If Carleton University wants to work creating and maintaining a learning environment free from discrimination, you hire a Deaf instructor to teach ASL and Deaf studies. I encourage you to speak out against discrimination in pursuit of social justice.

Would you hire an Anglophone to teach French? Or a PhD in Physics to teach Nursing. I am 73 years old. I am a lifetime educator, now retired from The University of New Brunswick. You choice is an insult to the Deaf community.

ASL instructors must be DEAF with a full of knowledge! You can’t hire white instructors to teach Indian or Black or whatever who have none of knowledge! Shame on you

This is so wrong in many ways. Deaf people are capable with skills and it is only Deaf people that can teach their language ~ ASL. By having a hearing person in the position, you are advocating for hearing privilege. Hearing people can find jobs anywhere where Deaf people cannot. A Deaf person should be in this job, period, there are so many well-qualified Deaf people who should be in this position. Please reconsider honouring and respecting Deaf culture community values and giving back to the Deaf Ecosystem. Give Deaf people the opportunities where they belong.

It is time to stop Audio-Speaking Abled take advantage of our #DeafTalent's Instructor position in ASL. Carleton University are supposed to invest and retain our #DeafTalent and expand our much needs Sign Language Interpreter career. Anything is possible but must do right. It is 2019, and Accessible Canada Act passed recently. It is time for Carleton University to clean up their acts. I agreed with this petition.

I am so glad that others brought this issue to light! This is a very well written letter and I support it 100%. As a graduate of Carleton University, a student who engaged with ASL classes, and as a HOH and culturally Deaf person.
