It should be deaf who can instructor the class because it’s our first language. If it’s non deaf that meaning steal our language to teach the classes. It’s not respectful. Thank you

Please hire qualified Deaf ASL users to teach these ASL courses. And consider establishing an accessible certificate program to qualify Deaf people to teach ASL.

Rivka Hozinsky, ASL Interpreter in Chicago, IL, USA.
I wholeheartedly support this petition.
It is beautifully written and demonstrates deep commitment, clear understanding and forward-thinking advocacy.
Please carefully consider the recommendations and be trendsetters and role models for other universities.
Thank you.

When I paid for lessons to learn Hebrew I had Jewish teacher whose language and culture are Jewish. I would expect the same knowledge and expertise in a class to learn ASL.

Hiring deaf instructor(s) to teach these ASL classes is more appropriate and is to everyone’s benefit. We need more well trained interpreters. Thanks.

I thought the days of hearing people teaching ASL were gone. I am sure that the university wants to respect the language and the people who use the language. Let's make sure this doesn't happen.
