ASL/English Interpretation Instructor - There is a palpable difference in the caliber of ASL 2nd language learners who have been educated by Deaf instructors vs. those who have been educated by hearing non-native signers. I would imagine your university does not allow other foreign languages to be taught by 2nd language learners who are not qualified in any manner.

The letter sent to Pauline Rankin with regards to hearing instructors teaching ASL is exactly my concerns for signing this petition. It is totally wrong for hearing to be teaching a language that is not native to them and that a qualified and trained Deaf person should be instructors.

As a hearing staff member at The Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf, Learning my second language from an instructor for whom it was their first language created a learning experience far superior to have a hearing instructor teach A S L . It could be compared to my children and grandchildren learning in a French immersion environment. I too am profoundly disappointed!

So wrong to hiring non-deaf person for teaching ASL classes. Thats discrimination for not hiring Deaf person who tried to apply that position. Non-deaf individuals don’t have a natural knowledge of Deaf culture and real ASL.

Please listen to the deaf community. It is enough to oppress the deaf people. They have a lot of skills to offer. HIRE a qualified Deaf teacher to teach his/ her native ASL. It is TIME!

If you want true authentic Language immersion, a Deaf person can offer that way better than a Hearing person so the student get full benefits from the Deaf person

Deaf ASL teachers should be hired with Deaf Culture and ASL linguistics background or born naturally Deaf. I’m Deaf ASL teacher myself over 20 years. The university should not considered to hire hearing instructors.

We have a list of qualified ASL Instructor and OCSD should be consulted prior to hiring. Hearing Instructor should not be hired in replacement of a qualified Deaf ASL Instructor to teach ASL and Deaf Culture.

It is as inappropriate to hire a hearing person to teach ASL as it would be to hire a settler to teach an indigenous language.
