Never hire nondeaf teachers to teach about the deaf culture and the language

"ASL learners who do not develop advanced proficiency become unskilled interpreters who directly impact deaf people’s access to employment, healthcare and other public services."

Myself deaf since born,love ASL sign,support deaf community!!! ASL sign are a very value for all deaf community included me!!!

Today is 2019 Time to act .. Deaf Person should teach ASL to hearing students is right thing to do. ASL is originally from deaf communities for many years. Hearing person should not teach ASL to deaf students because not knowing Deaf Culture , Deaf History and ASL . no more advantage of Deaf People's history, Time to ACT !! Please make it right thing to do !!! Time for Hearing people to educate themselves or ask Deaf people to explain why ASL is very important to Deaf Communities !!

Non-deaf teaching ASL? It’s like non Indigenous teaching people of Indigenous language.

You have a responsibility as a prominent university to hire the best teachers for all of the courses therefore needing Deaf teachers for all ASL courses. You should be an accessible work place for Deaf persons to work. Only a Deaf individual can teach their native language and culture. As a mother of a Deaf child I am disgusted by this happening in 2019.

Please hire Deaf people to instruct in their language.

Signed- I am shocked that there would be a hearing instructor/teacher teaching ASL classes. Hearing signers/interpreters etc need to be self disciplined and not apply for positions they are not qualified for. It is unethical and total dis regard to Deaf community. You cannot learn Deaf Culture and the roots of ASL from a hearing teacher/instructor. Every language has a culture and this is just as important as the language itself. I trust Carleton was not aware and will revise their hiring practices and reconsider the potential harm on Deaf community and future ASL students.

I support this petition for obvious reason! As many people already mentioned language appropriation, many qualified Deaf instructor out there and not given equal opportunity and many more.

ASL is not only beneficial to deaf and heard of hearing students, but also beneficial to hearing students to allow for better communication with those who use sign language. Trent University, where I currently go to school, for the 2018/2018 school year offered ASL 1 and 2. By taking these courses, I have been able to learn a new language and communicate effectively with those who use sign as a primary language, or as another language in their lives. I use it at work every day to interact with customers.

With so many qualified, under employed Deaf people in Toronto, it's ridiculous to hire a hearing person in this role.

Makes sense to hire a person living with hearing loss !!
