The "SNAP" (supplemental nutrition assistance program), which was formally known as the food stamp program, gives low or no income families funds to purchase meals with. This program, however, is extremely flawed. The amount allotted to each person per week through this program is about $30, which comes down to about $1.25 per meal. We took the "SNAP CHALLENGE" at Georgetown Visitation, as a school, only eating meals purchased for $1.25 for a whole day to put ourselves in the shoes of those who rely on this program. Through this, we learned that it is nearly impossible to purchase nutritious meals, or to even stay full throughout the day. The SNAP program does not allow these families to receive the funds necessary to purchase nutritious meals for themselves and their children.
