Underrated, brilliant songwriter. I would agree that John single-handedly invented the "Americana" genre with songs like "Mother Country," "Missouri Birds," "Cody." etc., etc. The list of great songs goes on and on.

Dear Paul, Thank you for the wonderful article on John Stewart. Being a fan myself, I used to go see John and Buffy anytime the would play in the bay area from the Sweetwater in Mill Valley to the Boarding House in San Francisco. Our frequent trips to Mill Valley allowed us to become friends with Buffy's mom, Nancy. We spent many evenings sitting with her and watching John and Buffy perform. Many years later, a neighbor of John's began working for me. When John passed away, I wrote what you see below. I gave her a copy to give to Buffy, whom I was told liked it very much.
"John Stewart passed away Saturday. He was more that just a songwriter and storyteller. He felt the pulse of this country from the lonely soldier to the farmer to the working man. He told the stories we needed to hear. I was once told that, in the Old West, if you saw a man with high moral value, who treated everyone with respect and knew right from wrong, you would point to him and say, "He rides good horses." John was one of those men."

It is said about the cowboy
Who chooses right from wrong
They say "He rides good horses."
Sturdy stock that makes him strong
When tempted by the devil
To drift to the outlaw side
He stays among good horses
The kind he'll always ride
Life's a herd of good, some bad
He works upon the way

To help rope in the strays
And when he rides to heaven's gate

I don't understand why John isn't in the Hall yet. The man's produced such a large catalog of well written and oft recorded songs. His post trio songs are certainly some the best and earliest Americana songs being written. He has been the inspiration and Northstar for many a new song writer.
