As both a mom and a primary teacher, I believe that every adult in the Church who works with minors should be a mandatory reporter. Children and youth deserve to feel safe at church.

I confided in my bishop about sexual abuse I was experiencing as a teen. At the time I thought I was sinning and needed to repent, not realizing I was actually being abused. Bishops need more training to recognize signs of abuse and it needs to be mandatory to report! If my bishop had reported my abuse, it could have spared me 3 years of sexual abuse. It's long past time for this change.

Sexual abuse destroys lives. My sister is 60 and was abused between ages 6-7. Her life has been a mess since. On no planet is this ok. And protecting the “good name of the church” in lieu of protecting the victims is evil. Jesus didn’t mince words about what he thought about those who harm children. And those who protect those who harm are equally evil.

A church leader should not be exempt from mandatory reporting - especially when those leaders have zero training as counsellors and yet are in positions that warrant such training.

It’s insane to be allowed to have a private hotline to report abuse and not be contacting legal authorities to investigate the abuse. Very sketchy and immoral

Clergy should always always always report abuse to authorities. Victims should be The Church’s number one priority
