Dan would have wanted his children to have a relationship with his parents. So very sad to read this story.

Having grown up without grandparents, who died in the Holocaust, I can assure you that your children will be forever grateful if you let them rekindle that important relationship!

Wendi, one thing that is certain is how much you and Dan adore your boys. They deserve as rich a childhood as possible, and family -- both sides -- is a crucial part of that. The Markels are good people and loving grandparents -- please do the right thing!

Life is short. Also you don't want to have to explain this denial of access to your kids when they are adults.

Having worked in the field of Family Law for many years, I have seen first-hand the incalculable harm done to children by adversarial parties. When the warring parties allow their own anger and hurt to take precedence over the interests of their children; the children suffer. The long-term deleterious effects on children, who are denied access to parents and their families, are well documented. In this instance, the situation is likely to be intensified by the death of the father.
In virtually every culture the right of children to know their grandparents is well recognized as being important for overall stability and emotional development. I would urge the parties to set aside their differences and obtain counselling and mediation for the sake of these young children.

I'm the son of a Social Worker, whose wife, sister in-law, and foster brother are also Social Workers. I've seen it, time and time again ,the positive affects on a child when they're able to experience the wisdom of grandparents, aunts and uncles. Supervised visits can be a place to start.
There is no humane explanation for this.
