I have no problem with the local factory farm, but I have a big problem with townspeople not being able to raise chickens when it can be done just outside the city limits. Liberty and justice for all. The threat is more likely from wildfowl anyhow.

Let Preston raise his chickens! Focus your boredom on literally any of the other problems the community is facing.

We currently have 6 of our own laying hens in a residential community. Not once have we ever had a complaint of smell or noise from any neighbor or passers-by. Our elderly neighbors enjoy sitting in a lawn chair next to our coop in the warmer months and feeding our ladies their bread heels and many times, we have had ppl (children and adults) walking by ask to come and pet our chickens when they are out in our yard for evening playtime and is an opportunity for them to see them up close and learn more about them. It is a great way to eat more naturally and healthy (the incredible, edible egg) and they make great companions just as any cat or dog does. I don't see why Estherville would prevent homeowners from having these wonderful creatures. Then again, I don't understand the Pit Bull Ban ordinance in Estherville either. Chickens are allowed in many urban towns (Iowa City, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Fairmont etc etc). Most places have a limit of up to 5 or 6 with no roosters. Pass this please!

I support this. Limit the number each household can have. There is so much more to worry about in this town than if people want a few chickens. Work on the big problems and and stop wasting time on the small stuff.

I see no problems with this to be legal. It's educational to the community & families who would chose to participate. The added bonus is that it IS much more healthier than any factory farm's food supply & their false claims at those who choose to this as well. The power of knowing what we eat, what IS exactly in our food, food chain & going on with our health is OURS as individuals to have & KEEP that right to have. Always.

The no reason why we shouldn't be able to have layer chickens. I have 2 and they make as much noise as the neighbors dog barking. I believe that the is better things for our city employees to worry about!!!

Rural communities should take pride in the "sublimely simple" characteristics that set them apart and make them some of the best places to live. As long as no city ordinances are broken, this is a non-issue. The chickens should stay!

If Cedar Rapids allows backyard chickens, there is no reason Esterville can't.
