Leave the skunks alone. Everything from the beautiful eagle to the skunk is part of nature. Some are prey animals and some are predators. The skunk is both. If you kill off too many skunks, it will affect many other animals. The predators that prey on them, will suffer from loss of food. And the mice, that skunks prey on, will increase greatly in numbers. I'm thinking that the same people that want the skunks killed will be the ones that complain the most when unwanted mice start getting into their homes. Humans are too quick to cull animals with disastrous results. Leave them alone.

Hi, nice that so many people want to save the skunks. I don't want to destroy them either, but they are living in my backyard and scare my wife and cats. I've been trying for weeks to deter them, but they keep digging back in. I've started to trap them and will relocate them instead. Can anyone of you who wish to save the skunks let me know a safe place I can take them to?

I have lived in Taradale for 18 years. As in all parts of Calgary- you see them ocassionally. There are about 18,000 people living in Taradale- which encompasses a 2.9km2 area. I highly doubt the woman who started the petition against skunks knows there are exactly 12 skunks living in Taradale. Is she a wildlife Biologist conducting a rigorous population survey? She is obviously a person who just does not like skunks. She said they follow and chase people. That is just an outright load of crap. If a family member happened upon one on her step - I am certain the skunk was as alarmed as she and the perception of the skunk "chasing" her is just not skunk behaviour. Likely she provoked it by trying to "shoo" it away and the skunk stomped and mock charged with tail in the air. In truth it takes a lot to provoke a skunk to spray. Yes dogs do get sprayed - but that's because THEY go after the skunk and the skunk just defends itself. It is true that skunks will burrow under spaces like decks or sheds, but all you have to do is block them off and they will move on. Do make sure no skunks are in there when you do so. The only thing I agree with is there is when people completely feel they cannot co-exist with skunks, nor make no effort to do so- that perhaps the City could indeed pay for at least some of the cost to attain a PROFESSIONAL to humanely deal with the skunk. There is no valid reason to kill skunks. Skunks are beneficial to communities as they keep rodent populations under control. Killing adults will inevitably lead to orphaned young which will die with no parents to feed and protect them. Please do not implement this inhumane practice.

we do not have the right to inflict upon skunks an infantile abhorrence of them, on the basis of fear and ignorance. skunks have the right to live here just as other wildlife; their contributions to a healthy environment are well known.
