The time of the Laverne Cox lecture is currently in conflict with the 2016 Iowa Caucus on Monday, February 1st. Many who would like to attend the lecture also want to attend the caucus. There is not enough time in between the two events for people to feasibly attend both. Our goal is to move the lecture time one hour earlier in the day so that people can attend both.
Current schedule of events:
Laverne Cox lecture @ 5pm
Must be registered at Iowa Caucuses by 7pm
We are told that anyone who is not signed in by 7 will not be allowed to caucus. If the lecture were moved to 4 pm, this would provide adequate time for people to get from one location to the other.

I have been spending my nights making calls to the event organizers to explain why this shift is necessary for our community. They are not budging yet but I am exhausted and remain fully committed to finding a way to make both happen.

The amount of support for this change has grown beyond what I imagined when I first started this. It is draining to keep pushing against a rigid schedule but seeing you all agree that this matters keeps me going.

I am excited about both the lecture and the caucuses, and fully support the idea of moving the lecture one hour earlier to facilitate everyone's opportunity to participate in both.
I would love to see Laverne speak - that would be an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity! however, I want to excersive my civil duty as an American to help select the next president! Thanks for starting this petition!
The caucuses are an institution - UI should not force voters to decide between two good events.
Another night would be a lot better, but 4 PM would at least make it possible for people to attend and get to their caucus sites. Johnson County has the highest per capita caucus attendance of any place in the state, and the caucuses are a priceless organizing tool for the fall campaign. I would really like to be able to represent myself at the caucus as a member of the lgbtq+ community and attend Laverne Cox's lecture - she's a transgender activist who I look up to. I hope Laverne would understand how important caucusing is to many UIowa students.
"just living" means playing an active role in the political process

Oh this earlier time would make me so happy! I can't not caucus, I would have to miss the lecture which would break my heart. An hour earlier would be amazing!
