Through the suppression of a desire to support a Latinx Studies concentration, Princeton presents its institutional racism and oppression.

I was initially willing to give the University the benefit of the doubt here, but when Arlene told me how little guidance she was given by the committee in crafting a proposal (which they could then summarily reject) I was stunned. This isn't just about silencing Arlene and other POC (though it's that too), it's about Princeton being academically inflexible in general.

Why are there so little courses focusing on Latinx culture pre-colonization?

Seriously, Princeton? Schools that are less than a quarter your size and have no where near the same $$ endowment manage to have Latinx studies departments. I'm pretty sure you have the resources to make this happen if you actually cared.

Good luck, Arlene! Their rejection seems totally unfounded, and you should get to study Latinx studies just as anyone can major in East Asian or Near Eastern or African-American Studies.

Because duh.

I think it's valid for Princeton to want all of their students' scholarship to be grounded in a methodological approach -- but then why do we have departments like Near Eastern Studies, Slavic Studies, and East Asian Studies? If interdisciplinary regional studies are legitimate to be majors than why is Latinx studies not good enough for that reason?

Education was meant to cultivate curiosity, not limit student autonomy in the learning process.

I am ashamed to say I am from the Princeton area. Change that, Princeton administration.
