Lancashire County Council - please do not destroy the Britannia Coco-Nut Dancers

Losing this event will only diminish Backup and English culture as a whole.

Embrace the heritage of the area rather than destroying it for future generations

If you lose your traditions you lose your direction , embrace your tradition and secure their future.

Don't be ridiculous. Keep our heritage alive.

Simply a pathetic attempt to make more money for the Council coffers I suggest........

Hands off tradition

For goodness sake, in a world full of alienation and disenchantment, don't destroy your own heritage and traditions!

It's a slippery slope for British folk dancing and festivals if Lancashire County Council allows a 156-year-old tradition to be banned over some petty code violation. Perhaps if the Council recognises the heritage and tourism value of the Britannia Coco-Nut Dancers and works with them then arrangements can be made for this event to continue - arrangements where ridiculous fees are not necessary. Celebrate your riches Lancashire!

The people of the LCC will NOT be remembered for their deeds as much at the Coco-nut dancers, who will always be admired and honoured. Lancashire County Council should be ashamed and rethink their decisions.

Please don't use health and safety as a reason for dancers and local parades of this nature to have to employ traffic management companies. In my experience, such events are very well managed by the organisers and without incident. The Health and Safety Executive have been running a campaign for the last few years to stop such nonsence. Please take a reasonable and risk based approach. As long a a suitable and sufficient risk assessment has been carried out and the organisers have put in adequate controls, there should be no need to put in requirements disproportionate to the nature of the event in the name of Health and Safety . I filmed the Bacup Coco-Nut dancers for a BBC documentary - so well organised and hardly a raucous event. Similar traditions have died out but Bacup has kept going. Incredibly unique. I hope the LCC sees this.

Those dancers are really great to watch. Have you seen them dance close up, with the the band playing? It's a unique local tradition, and a great, colourful, happy one. You should actively support it, and be proud of it.

Just tell the people not to stand in the road - don't blame the dancers! And people do stand in the road it's their problem.

Keep ENGLISH culture alive

In any other country, they would be supporting such an event as part of their cultural heritage. Why, in Britain, do we do the opposite? Come on LCC, you should be encouraging the Britannia Coconut Dancers in their annual Easter dance display

Where are the figures that back up the council or is it just a perceived risk which encourages the council to take such a risk averse attitude. I would refer them to the blazing barrels in Hatherleigh and Ottery St. Mary, whose councils have a more enlightened attitude both to tradition and tourism.

we are supposed to be multicultural, so why not support english culture?

What is so wrong with preserving our heritage. We seem to be the only country in the world that doesn't give a dam about it's inherent culture.

Please stop attempting to ruin this wonderful tradition!
