Hi carole, I am not sure why it appears non PC. I guess because they are black-faced, but that valley is full of coal mines, and in the days before most mines had pit-head showers it was normal to see miners coming home from work on the bus with black faces . The similarity of the tunes to Cornish tunes is evidence that there is a mining connection - the Cornish were the finest deep miners in the country , and many Cornish miners came to Lancashire to work the coal pits. I don't think the blackface has any racial reference.

Don't Lancashire County Council's legal dept know that in statute it clearly states that Morris dancers should "not be impeded in the performance of their art"!

The Coconutters are the only reason many people have even heard of Bacup, and definitely the only reason they visit the town. Why feature them (eg on information boards) then deny them the day that defines their existence?
