Lake Thoreau and all Reston lakes are invaluable assets to all Restonians. I know that RA is aware of the current debacle and seeking solutions. But if nearby residents have noticed long-lasting degradation of Lake Thoreau conditions, RA needs to hear observations and discuss restorative measures NOW. Thank you for organizing SOS to effectively communicate our concerns. During the Covid crisis, without your photos and those in other media, many of us would have no way of knowing the extent of this problem. Further, I encourage Walter Alcorn's office to be contacted lest one of the causes be storm drainage from TSA corridor properties and VDOT road debris pouring into the lake through drainage pipes, further exacerbating its fragile state.
RA watershed dept. has its hands full with invasive species, extreme storm events and hot temperature but delaying remediation will NOT help and only cost more as conditions deteriorate. Where are RA's CEO, COO and Board President during this public outcry?

As with other community issues, including this one, a proactive communications approach using two-way communication channels, would have deescalated this situation and created a community supportive of the Association, an opportunity to create a shared understanding and volunteers to help support RA's efforts.
In addition to our current situation with the lake, I would like to see engagement with the county and a push for future developers to mitigate their runoff into the lake. The dredging was just done 2 years ago and the coves are already starting to fill in with sediment which contributed to the hydrilla growth to overtake the lake so quickly. Explore dredging deeper in the coves where there are runoff drains, move up the dredging of lake Thoreau on your capital projects list (it can't wait every 10 years anymore), analyze where most of the runoff is coming from and go back to the sources to mitigate it with a goal of 2020 storm-water standards with the help of the county to get land owners to cooperate, or look for solutions outside the lake to help mitigate. Please look at the bigger picture.
Please take ownership of our current problem, the responsibility to manage the community resources is a core reason why RA exists.
The Lake Thoreau community has an event approved by the RA board, on August 22nd, explain to the community if there are any safety precautions they should take.

I walked there today and saw a turtle struggling to escape a tangle of dead hydrilla. It was too far out for me to help. Get this stuff out of the lake. It’s hurting out wildlife!!

I’ve been begging RA to put in more grass carp for 5 years with no success. Instead they have turned to chemicals and refused to take responsibility with the fall out from their actions. We deserve insight into why RA has made the decisions they have made.
