It should be readily possible to allow a cooperative space among these tenants to provide a space for these needs right away. It makes sense on so many levels, and the cooperation of the building owner should not be a barrier.

As a mom that recently returned to work, a lactation room is essential. Providing a space to allow mother's to pump or nurse is legally required, not to mention the right thing to do.

As a mother I have struggled to find places where I can be a social adult while also feeling welcomed as a mother. Allowing a brushing room in this building would allow me to be with friends and family out in the community. I would not need to “hide” or got to my vehicle to nurse.

Moms need lactation rooms in order to go back to work and maintain their milk supply for their baby. Not having a clean, private space for moms to pump means you're forcing that woman into either finding a different place of work or pumping in an uncomfortable or exposed location. Considering most moms go back to work after only 1.5-3 months of maternity leave, and the recommendation is to provide breast milk for your baby for 12 months, that means the average mom needs a space 2-3 times a day for at least nine months, per child. The return on investment would be high in terms of happier, retained staff who feel supported in balancing work and their child's needs.
