The 46-year-old officer was arrested on March 3 last year "for his involvement in espionage and sabotage activities against Pakistan" for India's intelligence agency, RAW. A few days after his arrest, Islamabad has issued a statement claiming that they have Jadhav's confession on a video, which they reportedly used as an evidence against Indian in ensuing violence and separatism in Balochistan.

Indian government had acknowledged Jadhav as a navy man. However, they refuted claims of any intelligence ties with him. "The government categorically rejects allegations that this individual was involved in subversive activities in Pakistan at our behest. Our enquiries reveal that he apparently was being harassed while operating a legitimate business from Iran. While we probe this aspect further, his presence now in Pakistan raises questions, including the possibility of his abduction from Iran," the ministry had said.

"The spy has been tried through Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under Pakistan Army Act and awarded death sentence," the military's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Pakistan Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa "has confirmed his death sentence awarded by FGCM," it added.
