Standing Up to Racism in the Kieve-Wavus and Overall Camp & Outdoor Community

I witnessed 1st hand the efforts of those igniting this most necessary action and movement at Kieve/Wavus. The conversations were heartfelt with intent, intelligence and respect. Kalea Gale and all who participated and signed, well done! History has been made and changed by your dedication. Special thank you to the Stevens family, Maggie and the late Fordy for introducing us to Kieve/Wavus in 2007. KWE summer camps and TLS programming have a really important opportunity to be at the forefront of this important global issue. My first remembered instance of racism was in my cabin at Wavus when I was 8 years old. A fellow camper stuck up for me but ultimately nothing was done. Despite this, some my fondest childhood memories were at Wavus and I want to see them take a positive stance in the name of racial equality and justice.

As a community organization, KWE has an obligation to make a statement in support of the BLM movement. I’m proud of everything this organization has done for myself and so many others, however, we need to start prioritizing diversity and proper trainings as we continue on. Sending all my love to campers/staff, especially those close to BLM, and look forward to seeing how we do better in the future!

There is so much work to be done and opening these lines if communication is necessary in the outdoor community!

As one of few black campers, this petition is vital. Wavus needs to be more diverse and affordable.

We have a lot of work to do.
