Key School - We stand together

I don't know the truth because I was not there. I have read Carolyn's writings and I do believe and trust her testimonials and writings. I have one graduate from Key and another who left Key because it was not a good fit. I worried about my daughter because of what I learned from Carolyn as one of her abusers was still on faculty. I went out of my way to limit any time my daughter engaged with this person. It is perhaps the right moment in time for people to come forward who were harmed and for the present administration to confront its history. I know many graduates of Key who say they never knew or heard about this which is not surprising as abuse like this is well hidden. We should stand by Carolyn, her petition and request for clarity. I know that she has not had luck with the school during previous attempts.

Schools are meant to build lives—not tear them down. Shameful.

There was a lot of things that were inappropriate during the years. I knew of them. It was sad. What could you do. I was on the Board of Trustees for 30 years. I was a student at Key for 7 years. There were many rumors. Many were true. It is time for the truth to come out so we can do what we can to make what amends that we can. Love universal to those wounded.

Re entering Key at 11'th grade { prior 1-4}, I was surprised and shocked as to what was going on. Since the adults seemed to make no fuss about it, I just accepted the unexpectable behavior. Who was I to question the teachers and administrators? Besides, as a student, I did not know at all if it was illegal.Yet, any adult there knew, at least, if they had some sort of higher education.

I asked around alumni from five of Key's decades. What I found made me equal parts angry, scared, and disappointed in my fellow human beings. It's long, possibly ongoing, and I'm not sure the school, even now, has the will to deal. I hope it does. But I caution you: this sudden openess could be shut down. So bring people to these forums. Ask around to find out what happened. The information you learn and the more people who learn, the less likely it is that these forums could go silent, but they could. I know people who came forward as student in the 80s whose lives the school ruined. One, whom I believe was also abused, died horribly and young.

I believe this request is just. I hope that the response to it will be both just and merciful. I taught at Key from 1969 to 1974. When first on the faculty I was 21 years old. My experience there made me a true teacher, and gave me a great love for music and drama. I am grateful to all of the community for that. I have since learned about many very wrong things that I did not know about before. Some, I either knew, or had a sense were happening, others not at all. The lack of a strong taboo against sexual and even merely romantic relationships, gone too far, between student and teachers was a morbid feature of the communal life there, and we teachers should have known better, even rookies like me. I'm sorry that so many were hurt, and I thank Carolyn Surrick, whom I deeply love, for making this effort.

I stand in support of all victims and call on the Board to take action.

I trust in the Key School alum who have come forward. Helping them now will not tarnish the school’s reputation, but strengthen it.

As a former Key school teacher, formerly appointed member by four MD governors to the Governor's Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, and former Executive Director of the Maryland Chapter to Prevent Child abuse America, I advocate for the protection of children everywhere including in the school environment.

Not personally a victim but know someone who was. The trauma extended well into her adult years--she is still dealing with it. Please Key School, do the right thing.

I regret that I wasn't able to persuade the Capital to write about this two decades ago when Carolyn shared it with me. Times up.
