I sent my daughter to summer camp at the Key School one year in the 90's. She was always a creative and artistic child. Several people suggested she should attend the Key School as it had a reputation for catering to that type of child. At the time, their tuition was not an option for us. However, I enrolled her in the Key Camp with hopes of giving her the "Key School experience." Many years later, I came to find out it was the biggest and most horrifying mistake I ever made as a mother.

I signed this petition when it was posted over a month ago, but I waited to make a comment because I didn't know what to say at the time. I needed to organize my thoughts. I don't want to go into detail on this comment post about my experience at Key Camp in the 90's, but it was bad. I've spent many long years and sleepless nights dealing with what happened to me and the other children. After suffering alone for so long, it's good to know there is a community of people who want to stop the bad stuff that was going on. Thank you to everyone who has been working on this. I stand with you.

Deepest gratitude to all who have signed the petition. Your signatures and your supportive and corroborating comments have already made a tremendous difference. For the first time, Key has acknowledged as credible the allegations of sexual victimization of students by faculty and they have apologized. It’s a good start.
Because you have come forward to stand together, the era of silence is over and a supportive community is forming.

I don't want names - not at all. That is cruel. But when "moral injury" is thrown out... things definitely get vague. Is moral injury hurt feelings?
I've read the articles; things are hinted at but not directly stated. After reading/hearing so many women jump on the #metoo bandwagon and try to destroy someone's life because a date didn't go their way... I just think we would all benefit with specifics and not vague implications. If something improper happened, be frank. It helps both sides.

There are good reasons for not naming names in these forums. I suggest you contact them (Anne Arundel Child Protective Services), if you know anything. They are linked to the police.
It's not clear the school has responded openly to allegations in the past, nd we can be sure they're reading these comments. Why give them particulars?

This is all so sad. The courage of those affected is commendable. It seems to me the task now is to make sure the abusers are identified to prevent any further sexual misconduct and hopefully bring some relief to others through our support.

Nice to see you signing something. In January (pretty sure it was you) someone reported me to the school for asking you about this.
Acrimony is not in keeping with the tone of this petition, but I don't feel you deserve much dignity here.

1. I suffered a variety of abuses of power during my long years at Key. Most of them involved adults, but not all.
2. Of far more significance to me, overall, are the extraordinary education I received, the habits of mind it imparted to me, and the life-affirming friendships I developed, many of which still enrich me.
3. One aspect to social phenomena like this petition which troubles me is the way that it suggests that someone can visibly move their name into the column of “the virtuous.” I understand that symbolic gestures can be powerful, but they can be facile, too.
4. As I see it, the burden rests on each individual in this extended community not only to sign off on a petition but to examine their own behavior in the past and ongoingly. If you knew of abuses then, were you complicit somehow? Did you also engage in abusive behavior toward your peers? In your current place in life, what do you do with the power you hold? Are you content with passive signaling of virtue, or do you actively address injustice?
