Tom Crean was a proud Irishman who, before the founding of the free state and the Irish Tricolour, sought a way out of the poverty that existed throughout Ireland. At the age of 15 and after an argument with his father, Tom made his way to Minard and joined the British Navy. He was one of many Irishmen to do similar yet he never at any time forgot his roots or the county and country of his birth. His sled, always flew the Irish Ensign, at a time before the Green, white and gold flag came into existence. His favourite songs were, The Mountains of Mourne and The Wearing of the Green and from most accounts he sang them pretty incoherently.
When he returned home after his heroic exploits on expeditions to The South Pole and because of the political climate of the time, he chose never to recount his time in the Royal Navy, an understandable decision in an area and land where anti-British feeling was at a high.
What cannot be disputed is that here was a man who put others before himself regardless of their religion, their status or their politics and he more than proved this during his time South.
And so, almost 100 years after he arrived home to Annascaul and opened a pub, The South Pole Inn, in his beloved Annascaul, surely it's long overdue that he receives rightful and deserved recognition from his homeland.
Please sign this petition and allow the Unsung Hero be commemorated by renaming Kerry Airport in his honour.

Tom Crean is a true Irishman of immense courage, determination and personal endurance. A hero in the true meaning of the word, of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, and a veteran of all three major expeditions of the early 20th Century. Ireland has not until recent years acknowledged Tom Creans unquestionable contribution to world exploration. Whats more surprising is that his native County Kerry has also been slow in this regard. County Kerry needs to do make a substantial gesture of recognition for this man, and naming its airport in his honour would be very appropriate, and would i'm sure be most welcomed by the people of Kerry but also the rest of the country. Tom Crean is now internationally recognised for his antarctic exploits, thanks in the main to author Michael Smith.
