This is a great thing! I'm from Canada and in my town every school has something close to a GSA. It's very weird knowing other places like Australia do not already have groups like this in high schools. Glad to help :)

when adolescents grow up in an environment where they don't feel included, it can set them up for a lifetime of displacement. i strongly urge the union between straight and gay students and recommend that they be supported by the state department school system. .

Kenmore - you clearly don't understand the issues here. Anything that increases the safety for young people and reduces bullying is a GOOD thing. That's what GSA's do.

Good luck with your brilliant idea! You shouldn't have to convince your school that kindness and inclusivity is a good thing to do, but it says wonderful things about you that you're doing it. In solidarity!

A recent study conducted by Beyondblue has highlighted homophobic bullying in schools. The results are concerning with forty percent of adolescents feeling "uncomfortable" and "anxious" in the company of LGBTIQ persons. This, in turn, is perpetuating negative stereotypes and seriously effecting the mental health of many LGBTIQ youth. LGBTIQ youth, like all youth, need to feel accepted by their school community. Through this acceptance, they can realise their academic and personal potential and positively impact those around them. How can a school excel and grow when its community is so culturally divided? This is exactly why a gay-straight alliance is needed at Kenmore SHS. LGBTIQ youth should not have to deal with isolation, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts simply for being who they are. In the end, homophobia and transphobia hurts every party involved and we must create a space where students feel accepted and at peace. Please consider this proposal and let's work together and have a mature, professional and reasonable discussion about this.

People of all ages need to feel accepted. Kids in middle school and high school have a harder time coming to terms with their sexuality and feeling comfortable in their own skin. I feel like anything that will help them feel more secure is an extremely good thing.

Brilliant idea. Anything that can help to mitigate social isolation is great to see. Probably won't hurt to encourage discussion amongst school peers also, thereby reducing ignorance and hate. Win/win.
