The art program at Lupin Hill Elementary will be negatively impacted as a result of the proposed 30% reduction in hours for our specialist, Michele Young. Lupin Hill’s administration intends to cut Michele Young’s hours from 21 to 14 a week. This 30% cut will adversely affect the preparation time necessary to run a quality art program even though the funds were raised to support art, music and computers. Your generous contributions and fundraising efforts have enabled the Lupin Hill Parent Faculty Club (PFC) to have the funds for our vital art program. Art education plays a significant role in a child’s academic and social development. Lupin Hill’s PFC has the funds to pay Michele Young’s salary. WE OBJECT to those funds being diverted to areas it was not intended for. Our children can benefit from having art once a week like music and computers, instead of every other week. Please sign our petition if you want to avoid the proposed cuts in our art program and want Michele Young to have the required hours needed to continue providing our children with a well rounded education.

Updates

June 9, 2009

I have spent the last few days looking through the notes you left about how much this program means to your own children. It is clear that we all see the same value in Michele's work and refuse to let these funds be used for anything else.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me how much our community values Michele and the bright, creative space she builds for our kids every day. I honestly felt overwhelmed looking at the support pouring in because it proves we refuse to let these funds be diverted from our children. We have the resources to keep this program strong and your dedication is the reason we are forcing the school to listen.

Cutting arts is always the first thing they do and it makes me sick. Keep the art program fully funded.

My kids need art class every week. It helps them focus in other subjects too. Leave the program alone!!

Art is one of the few things my son actually gets excited about at school. Dont take this away from them!

Keep the funding where it belongs. We raised this money for art not for the district to play musical chairs with the budget.

Ridiculous. If the money is there then use it for the kids. Simple as that.

Michele is amazing. My daughter has learned so much under her. Cutting her hours is a huge mistake.
