We hope that the ACPS administration supports their students and leaves them in the larger workshop space! Science is declining in this country and we need to make sure those who are interested, get all the support they need.

I've interacted with students and mentors from Team 5587 Titan Robotics on many occasions and I've always been impressed by the students' knowledge and by the mentors' commitment to teaching students both technical knowledge and soft skills. Titan impacts so much more than just their own students, though - the team has been a consistent Impact Award contestant (which is FIRST's highest honor) for their work in bringing passion for STEM to the wider community. Losing their build space would be cataclysmic - both for the students of Titan Robotics and for the wider community which heavily benefits from Titan's dedication and work.

As someone who's an alum of a FRC team, this move by Alexandria City Public Schools and Alexandria City High School administration is one that is damaging to the team themselves. My former team, 9153, has to work from our parish's stem center where we take up about three rooms, but those three rooms are enough for everyone to safely work on what they need to do. This was because we had no room to work safely on my school's main campus. Practically forcing a whole team to work from a 500 square foot room is unprofessional and inconsiderate from the ACPS and the ACHS school administration. There is no way to safely work on a robot within a space that is big enough for just a couple of students. Please keep 5587 in their current space.

As someone who comes from an FRC team who's largest tool was a horizontal bandsaw, and a shop footprint of around 500 square feet, having a space that small will lead to saftey issues of students not being able to walk through or around the shop safely as the seasons progress

This program and the students are a tremendous asset to the community. I’ve seen the way they foster curiosity of STEM for young kids at countless community events. Providing them the space they need is the least we can do.

Titans Robotics is a banner ACHS program with significant positive impacts not just at the high school but also for the elementary-age students who enroll in their camps in the summer, and the middle school-students who participate in foundational, feeder programs such as those at GWMS. Titans Robotics provides a place for students to learn and grow a whole range of skills, and everyone is welcome. Denying them the space they need is short-sighted and flies in the face of all the goals in the ACPS strategic plan, such as student engagement. You could not find a more engaged, thriving group at ACPS. They need their space.

As a former technical mentor to the team, I can personally attest to the need for space when building a robot. Working with tools that cut metal requires safety boundaries in addition to the space for actual construction. Tight timelines, drive many students to be working on parts at the same time. The team also needs space for their critical STEM outreach, computer programming and design. This team serves all of the ACPS community, not just HS students.

I was on a FIRST Robotics team and I know for sure that ~500 sq ft of space is not ample room for the activity. Robotics is a fantastic program that teaches tons of important hard and soft skills. Give these kids the space to learn and play that they deserve!
