This why the World Bank is considered the voucher of the Third World Economies. They do not want to have something functional and ironically making profit for the bank. This is one of the few outlets where Bank mission is working fine. Like Saturn Devouring His Son.

The bookstore is a unique resource for the Bank. Not only is it a visible link to the DC community, it offers Bank staff and, more importantly, its clients access to Bank publications and outside publications on a wide variety of subject related to development. I also know that the bookstore staff are able to arrange for presentations to and discussions with Bank staff and other interested parties from authors on their books. These events often take place in the Preston auditorium. The knowledge sharing that occurs through the bookstore has substantive value and is well worth the investment.

Arguably the best bookstore in the Washington, DC area. A clearinghouse of diverse viewpoints, a forum where authors and policymakers can engage one another, and just a general all-around great place to shop! I don't understand why the Bank wants it gone; it is one of the organization's best instruments to further its mission of ending poverty via the spread of information and expertise.

The InfoShop serves as a visible, interactive, and critical link between the World Bank and the public. The InfoShop is truly much more than a bookstore -- it's a forum for an exchange of development ideas. Instead of closing the InfoShop, it should be expanded to a Visitors' Center of sorts with a new InfoShop being one component of our public outreach. The new InfoShop should also forge alliances with nearby top-notch educational institutions (GWU / GTU / GMU / AU), local think tanks and other universities (Harvard / Princeton / Yale). All in all, the refreshed InfoShop / Visitors Center should be a place for collaboration and corroboration. Instead of disappearing, the InfoShop needs a facelift and a renewed purpose to fulfill it's role as part of the Bank's public outreach strategy.

This is one of the core pieces and "business cards" of the World Bank culture of knowledge, learning and technical excellence - the "Knowledge Society". Don't close it down! How embarrassing - and how depressing!

The Infoshop is a beacon of important information and research amidst the maze of WB buildings. It provides crucial services for staff and visitors offering a collection of books and resources on development that answers individual needs as well as stimulates engagement in new areas. I agree that this is an unwise and ill-informed decision and should be reversed. This is just one more step towards being less informed and less connected with the larger development community.
