My first "real" introduction to the WB was the InfoShop. I was walking down the street and there it was! An entire store dedicated to development issues and cultural diversity. Over the years, I've bought books there for my own research and as gifts. I've referred students and colleagues. And I've attended numerous events from acclaimed authors. The InfoShop is an invaluable resource and treasure!

I love the WB Bookstore, as does everyone I know! Great place for gifts and meeting people. Stimulating environment, wonderful external face for the institution. I have been inspired to purchase and read many books from WB Bookshop which I would not ordinarily be drawn to, this closing would be a huge loss and does not send a positive message about the Bank's support (or lack thereof) for reading and knowledge.

Now unfortunately, such book store becomes rare and is getting completely overwhelmed by online. But there are people who are still appreciate reading on paper not online. More importantly, the place and space is where people can connect - if the Bank can talk a lot about connecting people and knowledge, I cannot understand how come the Bank can close such a valuable space...

As a WBG consultant and published author, I implore WBG management to keep the World Bank Bookstore open. As more and more readers turn to online shopping and e-books, the store provides a critical resource -- a hidden gem among independent bookstores -- in the world of international economics and development. It would be a terrible shame to close a chapter on this vibrant and unique aspect of the WBG.

Many of my friends who work in NGOs and the development sector love visiting the store and buying print publications and will be shocked to learn of this plan. Why can't we use this Infoshop as the WB Dev Corner (literally) -and interact with schools/colleges, stakeholders, NGOs/CSOs, visitors to DC? We could have very smart exhibits too in addition to bookshelves - given that this is museum and exhibit country - and we are literally on that street. We could have interactive development displays that show the interconnectivity of all issues that pertain to the development web. This store and the location are a huge opportunity to scale it up NOT take it down... If anything, we should explore ways to make the corner a development experience. Also, we should provide the option for anyone to walk in with a smartphone - access a kiosk, search for a publication AND simply download through ISSUU, Scribd, PDF, and other e-reader formats. This will provide more windows to a lot of our development work and those visiting DC from countries with low-bandwidth internet will be able to quickly download publications they need as well. Please keep it open! I loved one of the comments about a bookshop lending character to a city - very true.

We often bring clients to the InfoShop to illustrate the WBG’s breadth and depth of knowledge and examples of materials that can be shared with their organizations and their stakeholders. Not to forget the souvenirs and other mementos to remember the visit to the WBG.
I will never support closure of the books-store. In particular, our own and dear InfoShop.
