The WB book store is the intellectual connection of the Bank with the public at large. It is a good PRI. Quite silly to close it. There are other ways to reduce costs.

This landmark has been a wonderful and unique source of updated development news and research. This toolkit of new ideas and trends cannot disappear it would be a disservice for any individual or institution serious about learning about this dynamic field.

How about collaborating with the General Services Department and Library to add a café/gift store and showcase the library's new acquisitions? The Bank already has multiple cafes and a gift store (that does not sell Bank merchandise nor books) inside the secure areas: but if these were open to the public they should make more revenue and be a better place to meet visitors.

I very much hope there's a way to keep the InfoShop open. It sounds as if it's self-sustaining, so I can't see the value in closing the only publicly accessible part of the World Bank Group. It serves as a great resource for staff, government officials, NGOs, visitors and general readers who want to know more about the Bank, and does great work demystifying the Bank to people on the street. In a city of faceless institutional buildings with staff hunkered over desks, this is a welcome and needed "face," taking the Bank Group to the public. I always learned so much by browsing and checking on latest Bank publications in a physical location and in the context of other related published work. Publishing has clearly changed with a reduction in print, but there are still many staff, authors, researchers, and visitors who make use of the printed word, in a world of massive amounts of electronic information that might never get a click. The world and the World Bank Group need both!

The WB Bookstore is both a Washington landmark as well as vital resource for a diverse range of topics including and beyond international development economics and finance such as environment, sociology, climate change and much more. It is used by a variety of international workers, government officials, students and the like. Yes, you could probably dig up the information elsewhere, but little can compare to the pleasure one gets by browsing through the shelves of offerings.
