The school uniform is a great equalizer.
It's a signal to our girls that they are at school to learn, to challenge themselves, and to make friends — not to worry about having the newest shoes or right pair of jeans. Free dress creates unnecessary stress for parents and children, and can cause needless conflict and distractions in class.
Middle school is naturally a time of transition and anxiety for girls that can only be exacerbated by concerns about fashion and fitting in. Keeping the uniform is one simple way we can help them make a healthy transition from girls to young women.
So help us petition NCS to keep the uniform for Middle School!

I am in favor of a uniform for Middle School, but I would like it to be different than the Lower School uniform to differentiate the divisions. I also think MS students should have the ability to wear some jewelry, wear nail polish, and have more wide ranging shoe choices. This way they can express themselves while maintaining dress code, and they would feel as though they have more privileges as they move through the school.
Mother of Celia Capito '28. I strongly support this petition and have witnessed firsthand the benefits of a uniform over at St. Albans. The uniform is a great equalizer and allows students to focus on the right things while at school. I see tremendous value in the shared experience of a uniform through middle school and beyond.
NCS not having a uniform was a big factor against it for my daughter in deciding between schools!
Please keep the uniforms in place through at least 8th grade! I view them as important for both equity -- eliminates one way in which socioeconomic issues present -- and helpful at this stage of the girls development. Please consider making the change for 2019-20!
I completely support this. My older daughter is in upper school at Holton and in the mornings all she is thinking about is school...not clothes! I never understood this about NCS and I hope they keep the uniform for middle school!

Research increasingly shows that confidence in girls drops significantly at ages 12-14. The fewer distractions to take away from how they feel about themselves and their bodies, the more opportunities for focus on personal growth, development, and academics. The school uniform provides an important equalizer that becomes even more critical during these years and those beyond.
