This program is valuable because it encourages literacy in this new age of technology where reading is not as encouraged. With the literacy rates in this country plummeting, and attention spans decreasing rapidly through the nation due to the overconsumption of overstimulating short-form content, I find it more and more important to encourage the consumption of long form content like books which benefit children with information, increased attention spans, and encouraged imaginations.

Students deserve to have ample opportunities for reading and cutting funds from a program such as this makes no sense.

As a LAUSD teacher-librarian and RD Coach, I have seen the extensive benefits of Reading Decathlon. The program enhances student reading and literacy. Furthermore, it helps students develop greater collaboration and critical thinking skills. Please continue to fund this program.

I’m signing this petition because as a Literacy Interventionist, I believe that programs such as the Reading Decathlon not only prioritizes reading but is a way to celebrate and develop the love of reading in students. Much of the funding spent on reading intervention can be spent maintaining students’ passion for stories and books throughout elementary school and middle school where research has found students stop reading for pleasure. Please continue to fund the Reading Decathlon.

I think literacy in students especially across public schools needs to continue to be a priority and organizations like this celebrate that skill.

LAUSD, please continue to fund the Reading Decathlon program. This program is extremely important to these students. It benefits them in so many ways like building comprehension and critical thinking. Also, teaches them time management, team work and self confidence. Cutting this program will have a devastating impact on the students! SAVE the reading decathlon program!!!

It’s a wonderful well organized competition in which students spend months preparing for by reading. Reading Decathlon promotes literacy and exposure to diverse books of different genres. My students enjoyed their experience participating in Reading Decathlon this year and totally look forward to participating again next year. It is such a valuable experience for students.

The decathlon is very important because it motivates students to read and builds teamwork skills.
