LAUSD’s Reading Decathlon is important because it gets kids to actually read books and understand them. It gets kids that were not even interested in reading, actually READING. I know it promotes self confidence and expands their vocabulary which makes them more articulate. Being part of a team makes them feel like anything can be achieved and that anything is possible. The reading declathon creates a culture of learning and literacy, which can then be passed on to generations to come.

I participated in a decathlon as a middle schooler and to this day (27 years later) I remember the rush of being challenged on the different topics. I remember feeling the drive to learn more so I can be better prepared for future competitions. It was also very inclusive of all students as it played to everyone's strengths and met students where they were at. For those of us that couldn't play sports, the decathlon was an opportunity to experience the team spirit. Students today need it.

I’ve participated in the Reading Decathalon for the past two years. Many of these same students have approached me at Yallwest, the book festival I co-founded, to continue to talk about books they first encountered during the Decathalon. LAUSD should absolutely continue to fund this worthy program.

This is an excellent program that focuses on supporting the reading journeys of reluctant readers of color. The books chosen for our readers are current, we try to ensure that the majority of titles are within 5 years of publication, and are intentional mirrors and windows for our students.

Reading Decathlon is near and dear to my heart, and so many students have found their confidence, voice, and friends through RD. We have a national literacy crisis, so cutting funding for a reading program that incentivizes literacy and makes reading fun makes no sense. District funding for Reading Decathlon allowed schools to equitably provide reading materials for all interested students and supported teachers/librarians in running such a phenomenal club and competition.

Fomenting the love and enjoyment of reading contributes to building literacy skills and at the same time propel our youth to develop into well rounded citizens, if given the opportunity (the way to combat social media). Previous support and funding allowed to expand the reading program across zip codes but now it’s abruptly cut. Please reconsider and reinstate funding to a worthwhile reading program that yields so many lifelong literacy benefits along with personal development gains.
