Three generations of my family have attended Stonewall Jackson - my mom was in the first graduating class, I graduated in 1973, and my children attended middle school there. Stonewall Jackson may have been a Confederate general due to where he was from, but he was conflicted regarding slavery. When it was illegal, he taught Sunday School to slaves, and many of them begged him to buy them due to his fair treatment. After Jackson died, one of the sons of a Sunday School attendee who had become a minister, raised money for a stained glass window in his honor. The church is the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. This man's personal legacy has nothing to do with the hatred many are reacting to now with the adoption of the Confederate flag by hate groups. PLEASE do not change the name of Stonewall Jackson Middle School. Instead, teach the students and citizens of Jackson's treatment of others and tolerance. He should be held up as a role model.

A 1967 graduate, leave things alone. There are many things far more important than a school name that was established in the "40's". Get a grip.......

I am a graduate from STONEWALL JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL, both of my children attended STONEWALL JACKSON MIDDLE SCHOOL. I find it reprehensible to change the name of such a great school where I and my children have such great memories. Everything offends someone. If they are not coming for you now, they will come for you in the future. If you can not stand up for others, then who will stand with you when what you hold dear is being threatened. What happened to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is best represented when someone is saying things you do not like, but are able to agree to disagree. If everyone agreed on everything, then there would be no need for freedom of speech. It is easy to say you are for freedom of speech with speech you agree with, but freedom of speech is best represented when you allow those of opposing views to express the way they feel in a spirited debate without shouting down the other side.
