This is my home town but I live in Alberta. This seems very ridiculous taking the RCMP OUT OF Melita. I am sure there is enough going on around there to keep them busy!!

No, the detachments are not closing and I don't believe that that was ever mentioned. Perhaps the petition was not poorly written, but poorly read. The detachments will still have stenographers there, but no actual members.
As a citizen of one of these towns and someone that has used the RCMP's services, I know that there are Melita members that attend calls ON THEIR OWN.
There are also 3 constables in Melita and the Corporal is already in Virden. I would also like to know where you are getting you "99% of the time you are waiting 45 minutes" statistics from, as this has never been my experience. Please also note that this petition also mentions a wait time of 2 hours.
Physical location does matter and I'm not sure why you would think otherwise. In an emergency, time matters.
As you may note, this petition does request concerned citizens to contact their MLA and MP.

First of all, let's get one thing straight. This detachment is NOT closing and this petition is very poorly worded.
Second, there are only 2 Constables and 1 Corporal station in Melita. This means that there isn't 24/7 coverage (not even close) and that 99% of the time you are waiting 45 minutes anyway because the lone member in Melita has to wait for a member from Virden for back up.
Thirdly, it doesn't matter where the detachment is physically located. What matters is that there are enough RCMP officers available to provide proper coverage to an area. Currently the RCMP isn't able to do, and their Management isn't being held accountable by the public. Many detachments are left under staffed and it's officers over worked and this is simply unacceptable. Criminals are targeting rural areas for break and enters and are getting away with it simply because the resources for the RCMP to conduct full investigations aren't there.
I suggest that there be a petition to ask our MLAs and MPs to hire more officers.

As a farm dweller in the Tilson area, this affects me greatly! We rarely see a police presence as it is! Please don't put our nearest detachment over an hour away. In a disaster or crisis, all you will be good for is clean up. Another slam to our rural way of life. If no-one will live here, who will grow YOUR food?

Nobody knows more than the RCMP that when serious conflict occurres time is critical and may be the factor between life and death. Please don't put these people at risk.

This is ridiculous. As usual. Deloraine will be next if we don't all rise up. Members live here and don't even participate in community events. Time for action. Have a forum where we can have ab input, like a town hall meeting. That is my challenge to the powers that be!

We also need them in case of an emergency. Too many active oil wells and kms of pipeline not to have such needed services as close as possible.

Absolutely keep the Melita detachment! That's insane. We are don't have enough police presence on our extremely dangerous, unpaved shoulder highways where drivers can get upwards of 130 km/hr.

Why are we paying taxes, OH RIGHT........to line the pockets of the government? In return they do not provide services to the public in need, whats next, what more can we lose? Maybe we should get a big reduction in our taxes to reflect that!! Just the fact that our medical services are almost non- exsistant and the possibility of someone being held up at gunpoint or worse does not make the Town of Melita or the surrounding communities rest easy. Our biggest issue is crime control, border patrol, peace keeping and everything else is the gravy! Now don't count on getting the service for up to 2 hours...UN-ACCEPTABLE!!!
