I believe that people need to understand the significance of this statue as it relates to Italian immigrant pride and belonging when it was commissioned. The Italian people were persecuted and were looked down upon - similar to the way other immigrants were treated upon their arrival, and this was their contribution to the city of Syracuse and Central New York, to show their worth, pride and sense of belonging. The statue should be used as an educational teaching point rather than removed in which additional storyboards are brought in to talk about the indigenous people of the land in what transpired. The entire area should be “added to” not “taken away” from. Thank you.

Keep statue as is. If you feel the need to change, may I suggest replacing it with women who worked in the pocketbook factory, or Leaburys, or school cafeterias or maids at a hotel or janitors at a school like my mom. Many from Italy, Poland, Ireland, Germany and more. These people worked hard for minimum wage and were happy to have a job. They never asked to welfare or food stamps. They lived within there means.

What are the issues that are involved with the symbol of the Columbus Monument? The history of the founding of our country is at issue. The opening of the Caribean Waterways to the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean are at issue. The Country that has welcomed millions of immigrants is at issue. The immigrants who have built a magnificent Country are at issue. The Judaeo-Christian culture is at issue. Western Civilization is at issue. Charity, forgiveness and redemption are at issue.
Do we need an either or solution to the existence of a symbol? Could we not respect the symbol that Italian Americans raised up with great sacrifice and also promote the raiseing up of a repectful symbol to remember the accomplishments of the indigenous peoples? Both, Christopher Columbus and the Indigenous Peoples have contributed more than enough to deserve to be remembered. Why do we not consider the Native American Casinos proud symbols of the rise of the indigenous peoples into the economic system of the United States.? Perhaps they might consider building another fitting symbol to remember indigenous peoples. Only when the concerns of all people are recognized will we have healing.
