The statue of Christopher Columbus should definitely remain in its time-honored location in Columbus Circle in Syracuse, New York. Christopher Columbus deserves lasting recognition for his navigational innovation and courage in surmounting overwhelming odds. His memory is especially meaningful to Italian Americans, who faced their own hardships in their quest to make a new life for themselves in their new country. It is true that the United States of America has had its trials and tribulations. However, the United States, which eventually resulted from the early steps of Columbus in the New World, was the first modern democracy. Our country is the model that has inspired democracies around the world, and it has made enormous contributions in a myriad of fields. When I look at a statue of Christopher Columbus, I think of the nation we have, full of people of all backgrounds, who make up a mosaic like no other.

Don't buckle to erasing our national history. You cannot judge the past on today's standards. Look how far the country has come in equal rights for all.

There is no reason to tear down a statue that celebrates the heritage of Italian Americans. Add other statues, monuments, flags that also celebrate other groups ...rather than tear down what is already there. This circle already includes the US Flag, the Haudenosaunee flag, and the building that houses the Mission restaurant is believed to be an Underground Railroad site. Celebrate the rich history of our city by adding to not taking away from. Italian Americans still represent a large portion of people in our city - honor them also by leaving this statue in place.
