If the monument/statue is to be removed, a compromise would be to move it to a less-prominent location.

There was recently a story about a statue of Samuel de Champlain. Some found some of the representations offensive our inaccurate. A group there is working to provide more accurate information educational displays rather than take down or relocate it. Let's follow that example instead of destroying history.
