To the Honorable Mayor Ben Walsh: My grandfather Antonio Ilacqua was a founder of the Columbus Monument Memorial Association in 1934, and helped raise the money to build it. It is very much a part of my family heritage in this community, and I could not bear to see it taken down. Please do not give in to the demands of those who do not understand what it means to us as members of the Italian American community in Syracuse. Thank you for hearing all sides, and I pray that you realize what a loss it would be to our community to lose this monument.

My great grandfather a widower and father of 5 , helped build this country with his hard work on the railroad. He lived during a horrible depression and managed to feed his family Although I am not completely Italian I grew up with the Italian culture. Do not touch my Italian heritage !!

I am offended by those that year down our statues. Keep them standing and up in public view. Keep Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle. No one was ever perfect.

Don’t destroy the statue that means so much to the Italian community. It is not fair that our heritage should be overshadowed because it is interpreted differently by others. This statue was placed there in honor of our Italian heritage, not to belittle someone else’s. This statue is an integral part of the City of Syracuse and its history.

Stop trying to delete history! Leave the statues alone and definitely keep the Christopher Columbus statue. That statue represents all the hardworking Italian immigrants, one of which was my dad and our Native Americans joining together in unity. This insanity of trying to get rid of the history of our country needs to STOP! Oh God, hear our prayer!

Please do not let the voice of a few change the history for many. Do not remove the status of Christopher Columbus!

This is a monument that has been important to my family and myself for years. Joseph J. Lamanna and the nights of Columbus have been vitally important to Syracuse and that wreath that goes up every year is part of Italian American pride. No matter what the case is with the Natives it is said that Columbas discovered America for the KNOWN world. At the time the Natives were not and were considered as what they were for that time period. Pangea shows the travel of civilization and how this progresses to the parts of recorded history that leans toward the MODERN and Evolved.

I do this for my Nonna and Nonno, and my Aunt Mary Bordonaro that made the journey from Sicily to Syracuse and made a beautiful life here. My father was born here in America. Btw my grandparents both received a 100% on their citizenship test.

Don’t “cancel”‘our history. We are men and women, all who have our own faults. But we do not define ourselves by our faults, but by our successes.
