Columbus should be remembered for being a visionary, cartographer, introducing the principle of compass variation, a navigator, and the first to recognize the full importance of Atlantic wind pattern or the Prevailing Westerlies. Much of what he discovered are still used by sailors today.

Enough is enough and the Columbus Statue should not be removed. It is unfortunate that for the most part, radical college educated brats have no understanding of the necessity to judge history in the context of the era it took place. We need to question why that is? What was the status quo during the time a specific historical figure lived will certainly not fit into what our social expectations are today. We all know the history of Columbus' voyages as well as terrible atrocities committed. However...that does not erase the historical and courageous accomplishment his voyages were. Although scholars during that time agreed with early Greek philosophy of a spherical earth, the consensus was it was flat. For all Columbus knew, he could sail away from the known world and fall off the edge of the earth. It was a huge risk and one that should not be taken lightly. You don't see this happening anywhere else in the world although all countries have good and bad in their historical past. In modern history, the only other group that destroyed statues and monuments were the Taliban. This is not progressive thinking but rather; embarrassing on an international level, destructive to our nation and disrespectful to our communities. Our politicians need to start taking responsibility in their elected positions as they have a duty to all of us and not a selected few who think they have a right to choose what is acceptable and remove or destroy what they narrowly view is not is not.

If it wasn't for Columbus none of us would be here, his voyage was the single greatest achievement in mankind.
