We can't erase history. Don't waste our money to change this monument.

as a second generation Italian American I believe the statue should stay as a tribute to all the hard working immigrants who toiled so hard to build a life in America

The City of Syracuse was named after the Italian city of the same name. It was bought and paid for by the Italian immigrants who came here and who scrimped and saved to have the statue erected. It was done to honor their new home which wasn't always welcoming, and to pay homage to the Italian navigator who showed the way to the land of promise.
To remove this statue would be a slap in the face to the immigrants who built it and their heirs who have contributed so much to Syracuse. To remove it would be denying our history and that Mr. Mayor would be a travesty!

We must learn from our history, not deny it. Moreover, we cannot judge our ancestors by today's standards. Syracuse's Italian American community paid to erect the Columbus Statue, to tear it down disrespects them and their heirs.

The statue is a tribute to the Americans of Italian descent who contributed to the history of Syracuse and CNY.

This statue is a key component of the local Italian-American Community. It represents the heritage brought to this country by our ancestors. It represents the contribution made by the Italians to "the land of opportunity". It recognizes the conviction and courage of a great Italian explorer and navigator. It symbolizes the sacrifice Italian immigrants made by paying for the entire cost of design, construction and dedication of this statue and its surroundings during a time when work was scarce and these immigrants had trouble putting food on the table. It means all of these things and more and Mayor Walsh wants to remove it as a way of bringing peace and comfort to the community! it should be kept and the Mayor should find some other way to bring "PEACE" to our community!

I believe it should be kept and support many of the suggestions presented to also celebrate all Immigrants with other Statues. Also to expand signage to put in context of how the Native American culture was affected by the Colonization and how they initially supported these newcomers and how the Iroquois was the blueprint for our Constitution.

earned a master's degree in museum studies from syracuse university with a focus on ethnic museums and cultural centers...removing the monument is an insult to our italian-american community...and the immigrant communities across our country and our inclusive ethnic museums and cultural centers of our american heritages...

He colonized America he went to war with the Indians to claim the land as every other country did to claim land. The Indians brutally attack anyone who set foot on their soil so yes he fought and won. None of the people who are complaining today about him wouldn't be in America if he didn't fight for this land. The Native Americans received Reservations and tax free living and people are still complaining. Leave our statue alone he represents my heritage Italian/Sicilians. The government doesn't own it my family and others of my heritage donated to build and place that statue. It's ours and no one should have the right to take it down. If you take down our statue that it's only fair you take down Dr Martin Luther King's statues and any other statue that represents other's heritage. My grandparents and parents came over I 1960s. They worked extremely hard in the country every single day. They didn't understand and they were too proud to get help from the government. Taking down Christopher Columbus would be a huge discrimination against my heritage. It is illegal to discriminate against ones heritage and culture.

It is time to stop tearing down statutes just because some Activists decide they don’t like it. Ridiculous! If you read history through the years you will see there is good and bad in everyone. We all make mistakes some big and some small. This statute has been there for 84 years and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be there for the next 84.
