IT is truly sad to see that the culture and heritage of Italians, who have assimilated so seamlessly in this great country, is being attacked for political gain. You should be ashamed!!!

I am a Christopher Columbus expert, having spent years of my life researching the primary sources. He committed NONE of the atrocities that are currently falsely attributed to him, but rather was the first civil rights activist of the Americas (having, among other things, conducted the first "underground railroad" in the Americas rescuing Tainos from cannibal captors and successfully petitioned the King for the first civil rights legislation in the Americas to protect the tribal peoples). To eliminate any monument or holiday dedicated to this the first civil rights activist of the Americas would be an act of sheer hate toward oppressed peoples and policymaking based on lies and ignorance.

Great feat sailing cross the Atlantic , with no land in view, with sailors threatening mutiny, whereas the Vikings hugged the coasts of Greenland, Iceland , Canadian coast and Canada's Maritime Provinces, always with land in their view, all along their journey! Columbus was castigated by King of Spain for being too kind to Indigenous peoples. Perhaps you should take down statues of Hernando Cortes, instead George Santayana-in 1905 said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” In a 1948 speech to the House of Commons, Winston Churchill slightly changed the quote when he said (paraphrased), “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”

Give Native Americans their own statue and leave Columbus Statue alone. Italian Americans are entitled to choose their own heroes. This is a right I believed protected by US Constitution

As the daughter of immigrants, this monument represents those who proudly came to America just like my parents did and it should remain in place as it was paid for by contributions from the Italian immigrants who have contributed much to the history of America.
