Two reasons: (1) to not offend Italian Americans, and (2) for bravely opening the New World to the Old World and making possible the next phase of human progress. Statues do not necessarily celebrate the whole person but rather rigidly designate at least one great accomplishment on behalf of the commonweal.

Columbus Circle should remain as it has been for years. We should not be removing history. If people Are offended maybe you should put statues of their history in another location. I believe all statues should remain as is!!

THIS MONUMENT IS A PART OF OUR SYRACUSE, NY HISTORY. It must remain so generations of Americans can recognize & recall historical events. As in any events there are two sides, but you can NOT erase history just because 100 people are offended. I urge Mayor Walsh to STAND UP LIKE A MAN and have nothing to do with the removal of this fine monument.

As I read the headlines and the opinions on this debate, a few things become obvious. The statue has been used over its long life as a place to gather and be used as a venue to make opinions heard. Second, through this debate and prior protests or celebrations, we have learned so much not just about him and history, but also about the many groups that make up our community. Whether you celebrate the statue as an Italian American as a source of pride or protest the statue as a symbol of disrespect to indigenous peoples, without the statue there is no venue, catalyst, or trigger to have the conversation in the first place. Continue the debate so we can all learn from it. Use the statue as a venue to educate. Add to the circle and erect a second statue for the indigenous people and a third for the Africans that were brought over in the slave trade. Cultures and nations evolve as layers of new data and opinion are added to the timeline of history, but history can never be erased, just learned from.

Don't remove the statue, why are we trying to wipe out history. Next will be there wasn't WW I or II.

It’s ridiculous that we even have to do this! That monument was erected by people of European and native descent. They were friends by the end of construction and would be livid this is occurring.

We need to make known all the faith , skills , good things and bravery Columbus accomplished. If some of his crew behaved badly it’s not his fault. Was it Jesus’s fault when Judas betrayed Him ??
