Prevent Stanford from Cutting Professor Scott McKeon's Classes

It’s a testament to Prof. McKeon’s strength as an instructor that despite him teaching notoriously challenging courses, students feel compelled to speak up. As a senior, I’ve had my fair share of teachers and Scott stands out as especially patient, hardworking and insightful. He knows his material inside and out. Rather than let us observe his expertise, he involves us in the learning experience from start to finish. It would be an incredible disservice to students after me if Scott was unable to teach these core courses. Understanding all the challenges of the moment, I strongly recommend that the university take action to reverse this.

Scott was the best professor I ever had at Stanford and is the reason why I understand anything about statistics. He is the most dedicated, caring, and charismatic teacher and the whole department is made so much better by him. He really inspired me in a field that was both intimidating and difficult, and I couldn't be more grateful for his place in the department.

Scott hands-down impacted my decision to major in econ. He's an icon and one of the best teachers I've ever encountered!!!! Please let him stay.

By far the best professor I've had

Scott is by far the best teacher I've ever had.

Scott is one of the best professors I’ve ever had in my time at Stanford. He took the material of an exceptionally challenging class and made the concepts simple, enjoyable, and accessible for students from all backgrounds. He was always working to ensure he could help everyone during office hours, frequently staying behind (even after they were over) out of the sheer goodness of his heart and dedication to teaching. I have so many memories of him answering questions over email (no matter how late it was at night), conducting extra help prior to exams, etc. His passion for teaching and helping his students is undeniable and cannot/should not be replaced.

Scott is easily the best professor I've had in the Economics Department. He is engaging, charismatic, articulate, and kind. These are skills that are not common in professors at this level of teaching. Furloughing Scott would be an absolutely asinine decision on the part of the Department. The 102 series is a core part of the economics curriculum and there is no other professor better equipped to teach econometrics. The Economics Department can cut costs elsewhere.

Scott encapsulates the best quality of teaching Stanford has to offer to its undergraduates. Having taken classes across most social science departments at Stanford, his stand out as some of the most challenging, memorable, and useful. I urge you to reconsider.

Professor McKeon is hands down THE best lecturer/teacher I’ve ever had - not much else to say.

Taking Scott's classes was fundamental in my decision to declare the major. He teaches with such enthusiasm, and I truly looked forward to his class everyday, whether it was back in-person or online. As Scott says, he distills the concepts to "make hard things simple", and is such an asset to the Economics department. It is no wonder that reviews about his classes are consistently glowing - even as they are known to be some of the more difficult for the major. I was super excited to take his class Econ 137 this coming year and finish the "trifecta" with Scott, and urge the department to reconsider its decision on such a prized and caring professor.

There's so much going on at Stanford that I think we sometimes lose sight of why we're here. Stanford is a school, a place where we come to teachers to become educated about our world and contribute to it. Scott encapsulates a too-often omitted part of the Econ department at Stanford: the ability to convey information clearly and accessibly; the ability to share knowledge and inspire. I've enjoyed this benefit and I'm enormously grateful. He's the best teacher I've ever had, and I've gotten to take three classes with him (including 137, undoubtedly the highlight of my Stanford Econ education). Limiting Scott's classes is a disservice to future students, it's a disservice to the department. I encourage you to reconsider.

Scott is one of the best professors I’ve ever had. Not only is he an incredible educator, but he’s a very caring and invested professor. I am not an econ student, but taking his class made me want to continue in economics and statistics. His classes should not be cut.

Scott is THE BEST professor I have had at Stanford. His three courses are why I decided to be an Econ major, why I decided to pursue my graduate field even as someone who struggled in the area. He is a professor who genuine loves what he teaches and CARES about his students. He's stayed past his office hours times to teach us so we can walk away with more familiarity of the subject. For him, no question is a dumb question, and he leads us through the problem-solving process in a way that makes us fascinated with the subject and the learning journey. He makes stats, math, decision making, and econ fascinating in a way that sparks more desire to learn. All of his courses are exciting, interactive, and crucial for success in the econ major. When I talk to prospective econ majors and pro-fros, I always bring up Econ 137 as my favourite class at Stanford and Professor Mckeon as my favourite professor. If they are not econ majors, I suggest they take courses in the 102 series because Scott's classes were just so enriching and sparked many of my classmates and my own pursuit in stats, econ, and other related fields. Scott's three classes have by far been the most impactful courses of my Stanford career. They were challenging courses, but they were definitely the most impactful in shaping how I think and how I solve everyday problems. Stanford and the econ major would be losing more than a class by cutting Scott's class/classes.

Having taken all three of Scott's classes and worked as a TA for 102B, I can safely say Scott is one of the best professors I have ever had. He has the utmost care for his students and an art for explaining difficult concepts. The material he teaches so well is a critical foundation for later courses in the major. Losing him would be a huge loss to the Economics department.

It has been a privilege to be taught by Professor McKeon, and I truly hope students in the future get to share the enriching learning experience. Scott is an invaluable asset to the Economics Department.
