Valuable service for the kids that need it. It has worked well for years. Why change it?

The strength of local feeling about this issue clearly demonstates how wrong the council are in making the decision to 'restructure' the service. OIC is making some very poor judgements, trying to save a few quid by jeapardising the future chances of our bairns.

I attended the language unit as a child & know many children who currently use it! Why take something away that is so much needed that people have to wait extensive times to get on the books! This just proves the need for it in our community.

Put yourself in the shoes of a child or anybody who experiences speech and / or language difficulties. Imagine if your daily needs were difficult to communicate to others . Imagine how you might feel if all that you had come to trust and rely on was suddenly deemed as not being important enough to keep for the sake of your development and wellbeing. How would you feel? Please reconsider your decision, listen to those who it will effect. The repeated arguments for the 'reconstructuring of the service' that I heard from a Councillor, speaking on the radio came across as complete waffling. Keep Orkney Language Unit.

My son attended Speech Therapy and it made such a difference to him. It would a grest loss for it to be closed and leave the children of Orkney without access to this service.

My grandson has been waiting nearly two years to see a speech therapist. This is a disgrace that the council are planning to close the unit.

My daughter has only just started at the Language Unit, and I am devastated at the proposed restructuring of it. It will not be as effective for my daughter if the service was delivered at her nursery.

My great niece is almost ,4 and since joining the language unit she has said her first words please keep it open

My son had access to a specialist language unit and it was fundamental to the development of his social interaction, language and thinking skills. They are vital services and should not be lost.

The officials in the Education Dept should be taken to task over this decision. To have No discussion with parents and teaching staff is an absolute disgrace. Perhaps removal of some of the officials should be now considered as a Cost Saving, as a number of their recent ideas for savings, have been found out to be inappropriate.

Support for children with speech and language difficulties needs to expand, not shut down or reduced. Without specialist support the long term impact for children and society will be significant in terms of physical and mental health and economic outcomes.

Language centres are necessary to give children the best opportunity to succeed in life taking away this vital service will cost society far more in the long run if intervention doesn't take place as early as possible.
