I truly believe in hydroponics but I DO NOT believe that it should be labeled the same as organic soil crops. Hydroponics is a different science and as such, it should be labeled as Hydroponically grown. The growing system used could reflect that organic chemicals were used to grow but should not be considered or labeled the same as soil grown food products.

This is an important concept to ensure our children teach to their children.

The complexity of nutrients in organic produce that comes from soil that is farmed with organic techniques cannot be matched by hydroponics.

Organic and hydroponic are two very different things and need labels that distinguish the difference.

Some people really think they can equal or surpass what Mother Nature does? There are complexities so beyond our scope yet these people’s egos get the better of them and lead them to believe that what they are doing is beneficial. Just like that wonderful quote from Jeff Goldblum’s character in Jurassic Park: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”

Organic agriculture has always been about building soil. I have no problem with hydroponic farming, but it should not be certified organic. As a commercial certified organic vegetable farmer, I go to great expense to build soil on our farms with organic soil amendments and expensive organic cover crop seeds. The wholesale market for certain crops like tomatoes and peppers has become much more difficult in the past couple of years because of the massive amount of fake organic (I think that the current organic standards make it clear that you have to be improving soil health and therefore believe certified organic hydroponics are fraudulent) tomatoes and peppers from Mexico and Canada flooding the market. Keep the soil in organic!

I totally agree. A lot of hydroponics utilize fish waste for nutrients. What is the source of fish food ingredients? GMO corn and soybeans? Besides, plants were made to be grown in soil. So much ground has been gained through organic soil building. They can have their own label: Organic Hydroponic. H2O Organic?

Hydroponics have a place for some but to use the label "organic" is misleading.

The complex microenvironment of soil cannot be replicated in a water tank. Consumers have come to know and embrace the term "organic". By allowing hydoponic and aquaponic production systems to label their products as organic would be confusing and deceiving for consumers. Keep the soil in "organic"

Organic agriculture cannot include hydroponics - soil is key to growing organically. Please keep organic standards meaningful - no to hydroponics as certified organic.
