I am a young farmer, passionate about contributing to a food system that is environmentally sustainable, equitable, and secure. I will spend the rest of my career learning about the amazing soil ecosystems that produce delicious, healthy food. Allowing hydroponics to be certified as organic would dilute the certification and mislead consumers. Food grown without soil should never be organic.

I am a farmer that truly believes that the life in the soil is what translates into truly nutritious food. Hydroponics has a place for growing a lot of food but it does not meet the expectations of consumers or farmers as a fully nutritious food that the Organic label currently stands for. Allowing hydroponic growing within the organic label greatly jeopordizes the integrity of the USDA organic label.

The soil has always been essential to the growth and production of our food. Hydroponics require artificial inputs which are costly to both farmer and environment. To remaining sustainable and continue to feed our communities, we need organic farming, which requires natural, recycled, and recycable resources which will be in abundance as long as we respect natures laws. To grow food organically means to grow food as it is grown in nature. There is no vegetation found in nature that is not grown in the soil. To throw away the soil for corporate interests will be crippling to the most vuldnerable, namely, the poor, Farmers, and the environment. The organic label was created to protect those who are most vuldnerable and preserve the integrity of natural farming; taking soil out of organic is threatening our resources, Farmers, enviromnet, and health of the greater public. Please keep the soil in organic.

Organic food is about dense nutritional value without harming the individual or the planet. Hydroponics is an efficient growing medium however, it is only as nutrient dense as the the quality and variety of the ingredients the technicians add to the water/fertilizer mix. Caring for SOIL and allowing nature to leverage the need of crops is the only way to truly achieve organic foods. Anything else is fodder for agricultural corporations to retread the same path that got mainstream food in the hole it is in today.

Hydroponic agriculture has its benefits, but it should never have been allowed to be "certified organic" and should not be allowed going forward. I have been a consumer of organic food for over forty years and am increasingly distrustful of the USDA National Organic Program with its lax oversight of "pay to play" organic certifiers and their "faux organic" clients. If this pattern continues, the organic community will be forced to create another label to differentiate and protect itself from the USDA's big-ag, corporate-controlled influence.

As a new farmer (old person, new farmer), I am moving to my 2nd career due to my belief that I can improve this planet through it's SOIL In the process, carbon reduction, honeybee population, and general human well being will result. In my view, this is a win-win.

Organic farmers work hard to balance a whole natural system and maintain soil health naturally. That is an effort I support wholeheartedly! Hydroponic is it's own thing it is not the same as organically grown in soil.

Real food provides real nutrition by growing in real, fertile soil. Period. Let’s not confuse this with food produced in a man made environment, with man made inputs.

Hydroponic growing is not organic and should not be labeled as such. Hydroponic needs to have it's own label to differentiate it from foods grown in soil.
